Here is our story of how we started our social enterprise! We're so excited to share all the awesome things we've been learning and doing as we try to make the world a little bit better, one project at a time. From brainstorming big ideas to tackling real-world challenges right here in our own city, we'll be taking you behind the scenes of our journey. Expect to hear about our triumphs, our stumbles, and all the amazing people we've met along the way.

RESEARCH SOCIAL ISSUES

First, we researched the social development goals and we presented them to the class so we can learn about all of them. This task really opened our eyes to the many social issues around our world but also in our own city. We wrote a paragraph in groups about why we should prioritize the SDG of our choice.

STUDENT VOTE

Then, we voted for the SDG we wanted to focus on. We thought all social issues were important but the majority of students chose NO POVERTY.

"Every day, right here in our community, people struggle to provide basic necessities for themselves or their families. They face hunger, homelessness, and despair.”

Forms response chart. Question title: Which sustainable development goal should we prioritize?. Number of responses: 45 responses.

CHARITY PARTNERSHIP

We wanted to help those in need in our own community so we found two organizations and watched videos about the work they do. After every one voted most of the votes went to Shepherds of Good Hope who help people experiencing homelessness.

PARENT COMPANY

To determine our parent company name and logo, we were assigned to random groups, each group created a company logo, tagline, and vision statement.

STUDENT VOTE

All the students voted and Dragon Hearts For Hope received 35.1% of the votes from both class.

WEBSITE

Some of us learned how to set up a professional looking website powered by Shopify.

POSTER

We had a poster contest and students used Canva to create our Craft Sale poster that was used on our website, sent to our parent community and we posted the posters around the school. Some students also used Canva to create an animated video that was shared with the classes.

SEED MONEY

A few students were voted by our peers to present to parent council. They worked hard to put together a presentation and rehearse. We asked for $250 of seed money to fund our craft sale supplies and we were so grateful for their support.

PRODUCTION

We spent a week in class with our groups on making our products.  Most of our items were made by hand and we learned many transferable skills: collaboration, communication, decision making, leadership, time management, goal setting, problem solving and critical thinking.

SET UP

The night before the craft sale we set up the learning commons to display our products and in the morning  we opened up the doors so parents could buy and view our products before school. During school hours, we continued to sell more products and some items were sold out in the first block. By the end of the day almost all of our items were sold out and we even took in orders after our craft sale closed. It was great to see the the parents, staff and students support our event and our cause. Here are some photos from the day of our craft sale and our companies.

We raised…

Our goal was to raise $1000 for our first project. From our craft sale alone we sold (drum roll please) $1153.82 of products.

SHEPHERDS OF GOOD HOPE PRESENTATION

In February, a Shepherds of Good Hope representative came to our class to tell us what they do. We learned that they help adults in poverty by providing them food and clothing to use and a roof over their heads. That is why we decide to donate to them. The presentation really informed us about the organization.

BUSINESS WORKSHOP WITH MENTORS

Ms. Bianca and Ms. Ashley, our business mentors came in to help learn more about our business. They taught us about partnership and they taught us about the process of developing a product. We also did a group activity where we had to brainstorm a product idea given a target audience and specific materials.
